We can control emissions coming off the kettle fairly well, however, when the tar is deposited on the roof there is no way to control the residual emissions that are emitted.
So to minimize the any exposure to occupants in the building air scrubbers are used.
Large, 2000 cubic feet per minute (cfm), are placed in hallways and large common areas (cafeterias, libraries).
The air scrubbers are equipped with particle filters and a HEPA filter that will remove particles that are as small as 0.3 microns.
They also have a carbon filter to help control odors.
