K-12 Curriculum - Speech and Journalism

Programs
Speech

At the high school level, Speech will give students real life skills that will assist them in whatever future career that they may choose. They learn about research, making compelling arguments, dealing with others, time limits, competition , while having fun. There are numerous competitions throughout the year and students have an opportunity to hone the skills learned as they compete against others at the local, regional, state and national levels.


Middle School Speech

The purpose of middle school speech is building self esteem, self confidence and communication skills. Speech helps students build critical thinking speaking and listening skills. Students experience a variety of communication and performance opportunities.

High School Speech

High school speech helps students with research, organization and public speaking skills. Students learn to work under time constraints and learn to stand up as individuals and to assist others on their team as they prepare for competition.

Journalism

Underlying all course offerings in the
district’s journalism programs are
essentialelements of writing, reading,
and critical thinking of various media.

All students are expected to
1) write on various forms for a
variety of audiences and purposes
.

2) Become analytical consumers
of media and technology.


Texas Journalism Knowledge and
Skills include but are not limited
to abilities to


1) understand of media development,
press law, and responsibilities.

2) demonstrate understanding of
publishing principles and design
using available technologies.

3) demonstrate and understanding
of the economics of publishing.


Course offerings may vary from school
to school, but usually include:

Journalism, Yearbook, Newspaper,
Broadcasting, Photography, Desktop
Publishing, Creative Writing.
