Career & Technology Education

El Paso Indpendent School District's Career and Technology Education (CATE) is dedicated to preparing young people to manage the dual roles of family member and wage earner. We want to enable them to gain entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job and/or to continue their education.

EPISD has outstanding CATE programs which offer students a variety of career pathways through which individual interests can be pursued or through which new skills can be developed. Students may elect to take courses in any of the following program areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Business Education
  • Career Investigation
  • Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Health Science Technology
  • Marketing Education
  • Technology Applications
  • Technology Education
  • Trades and Industrial Education

The following are some examples of specific programs which EPISD offers through Career and Technology Education:

Programs


a rigorous, four-year health science technology program at Silva, including certified nursing assistant, licensed vocational nursing, and pharmacology programs;

a four-year pre-engineering program at Chapin High School;

The only Agriculture program in the city at Coronado High School;

a Pre-collegiate Teacher Preparation Program at El Paso and Irvin High Schools;

a very popular Child Development Program in eight high schools. Our customers are our own teachers and school patrons, if room is available.

large business education programs in all the high schools and in some middle schools;


industrial technology programs in most high schools and in some middle schools;

marketing programs in 10 high schools, including a new class called Sports and Entertainment Marketing;

an introductory criminal justice program in six high schools, with a three-hour capstone program at CCTE;

an International School of Business and Public Affairs magnet program (to open in 2003) at Bowie High School.

a variety of shop and pre-employment lab courses including cosmetology, Cisco Systems, legal and medical secretary, auto tech, I-Net+, computer repair, health science technology, fashion design, HVAC, plumbing, electronics, metal trades, advertising design, hospitality services, culinary arts, architectural and engineering drafting, and horticulture at The Center for Career and Technology.

Additional CATE programs under consideration for the following school year will include: EMT services, nail tech, and interior design.
