Governor Perry anticipates special session
Since the end of the regular session, Gov. Rick Perry said that he thinks the Texas Legislature will be back for a special session on school finance before the end of June.
Gov. Perry said, " My prediction is that after these members [of the Legislature] get home and spend some time with their constituents, they'll hear about school finance...and we'll come back between then and the end of June.”
State District Court Judge John Dietz set an October 2005 deadline to fix school funding problems in Texas, if the deadline is not met all state funding to school districts could stop. This ruling has been appealed to the Texas Supreme Court and the deadline to fix the problems may be stayed, meaning not enforced until the Supreme Court considers the case. A July 6 hearing date has been set for the court to hear oral arguments in the case.
Gov. Perry remains optimistic that a solution can be found and feels public opinion will force lawmakers to complete the task. "If there's a will, we can find a way. If they don't want to work to finish the job, well then, I think I may make, or I should say, they should make plans for a long and uncomfortable summer when they go home, when they meet with those constituents and they explain that they didn't act on education reform, property tax relief," Perry said.
