Pathways to Borderland Fitness
Big News!
The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) has received a three year federal grant called the Carol M. White Physical Education Program. These grant funds ($750,000) will be used to implement a physical education program called” Pathways to Borderland Fitness”.
Call for Action!
This grant serves as a call for action. The United States’ children (including El Paso) have become terrifyingly obese, and this is the first generation expected to have shorter life spans than their parents according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
Childhood Obesity
The EPISD recognizes the need to combat childhood obesity, diabetes, and health related diseases through increasing moderate to vigorous activity in physical education class, during school, and after school. Pathways to Borderland Fitness (PBF) are for students and their parents. Students and their parents will be empowered with the health related fitness knowledge and technology tools which will increase health and wellness and contribute to academic success.
Changing Behaviors
Behaviors established early in life can affect the risk of disease through adulthood. Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Commissioner, Texas Department of State Services said; “It is easier to build a child then fix an adult”. In essence, that becomes the premise for this grant.
