Sky's the limit for Educational Support Personnel

For one sunny, celestial afternoon, some of the best and brightest stars in the El Paso Independent School District crossed paths.

February 15, 2007 — EPISD News

The District’s stellar Educational Support Personnel, selected from each campus and department, gathered in the Professional Development Center on Feb. 6 as EPISD recognized each and every one of the nominees for their tremendous efforts. When it comes to the talent of the Educational Support Personnel, the “Sky’s the Limit.” Many say these dedicated, hard-working employees are the foundation of the District, working diligently day in and day out, all in the effort to help EPISD achieve and soar into success.

“Without the support personnel, we could not pursue and accomplish the many challenges and tasks facing us,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia. “I want to thank each of you for your dedication to the District.”

Hundreds were present at a luncheon where all 111 nominees were praised with honors and special gifts, each congratulated by the Superintendent and the Board of Trustees. Six finalists were also unveiled and now move on to the next round before the selection of the District’s top two Educational Support Personnel Award winners of the year.

The finalists are:
-- Sharon Burnette, nutrition/liaison clerk, Tippin Elementary
-- Carmen Cangas, cafeteria manager, Mesita Elementary
-- Agnes Chacon, paraprofessional, Guerrero Elementary
-- Ellie Lara, secretary, Staff Development
-- Yvonne Torres, professional staffing assistant, Human Resources
-- Gabriel Vasquez, paraprofessional, MacArthur Elementary-Intermediate

The six finalists were selected by a panel through a blind-judging process. Judges read through each and every nomination that only described the person and their efforts. There were no names or schools listed. That panel of judges will now individually interview each of the six finalists to select the top two winners, who will be announced at a special banquet in March. The finalists receive $300 and the two winners will receive an additional $500, all in gratitude for work well done.

If you know an ESP nominee, take the time to congratulate them. It’s a well-deserved honor!
