EPISD teams with Salvation Army for food drives

EPISD has joined with the Salvation Army this fall to help those in need. Food drives are being conducted at campuses and Ed Center to support the Salvation Army’s “Stock Our Shelves’ program through Nov. 17.

October 20, 2009 — EPISD News

A news conference was held at Ed Center Oct. 20 to kick off the districtwide food drive.

Employees, students, parents can help by donating: Canned fruits, vegetables, soups, chili, stews, meats, chicken, turkey and tuna fish; box dinners such as macaroni & cheese and other pastas-based meals; peanut butter; and breakfast items such as cereals and oatmeal.

School and Ed Center will be setting up an area for cans to be dropped off at their respective locations.

Salvation Army Facts

• More than 62,000 meals are served to families in crisis through their emergency family shelter and soup kitchen.
• The shelter houses 25 to 30 families each evening at its 106-bed facility.
• The canned goods and non-perishable food requested are used not only to feed the individuals in the shelter but help serve the more than 3,000 families that receive food boxes.
• Each food box is valued between $75 and $100 and has enough food to feed a family for three to five days.
• The average value of a canned good is $1, so for each item donated it allows the Salvation Army to direct the funds to other programming for the homeless, including parenting classes, ESL, tutoring and financial literacy.
• The donation of five canned good items allows the Salvation Army to feed an individual three meals.
