Our school is named after former Texas House Representative Paul C. Moreno. He holds the record of being in legislative office longer than any other Hispanic in the United States. He served for 41 years!
Paul C. Moreno was born on April 28, 1931. He grew up in South El Paso’s “Segundo Barrio,” graduated from Bowie High School, then served in the Korean War as a United States Marine. He received his bachelor’s degree at The University of Texas at El Paso and his law degree at The University of Texas at Austin.
In the year 2000 Moreno Elementary was dedicated in his honor. Mr. Moreno wrote a thank you letter to the parents, faculty, and students of our school. He said, “One of the greatest accomplishments in life is to have a school named after oneself.” Mr. Moreno chose the dolphin as our school mascot because they are highly intelligent creatures that are also kind and social. He visited our school often while he was alive, and he would stay for several hours at a time, greeting our students, parents, and staff.
Mr. Moreno passed away at the age of 86 on September 1, 2017. His presence fills the school, and his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of each person that his kindness touched.
