Code of Conduct For Effective Meetings

    1. DEIC meetings focus on instruction and student performance.
    2. Committees are formed to research, collect data, and report.
    3. Attendance at meetings shall be treated as a top priority. If any member does not attend two consecutive or a total of three regularly scheduled meetings during the school year, that person forfeits membership to the person who received the next highest number of votes in the same election year. (The member has the option to appeal to the facilitator on an individual basis, and to the council if necessary.)
    4. Published meeting notices and background information are provided prior to meetings.
    5. Courtesy practices:
      • listen attentively
      • wait to be recognized by the facilitator
      • limit yourself to one question with the opportunity to be recognized again if time permits
      • respect others' opinions
      • turn down cellular phones
      • remember 3-5 minute time limit
      • keep responses focused on agenda items
    6. Meetings start promptly at 4:30 p.m. and follow stated agenda times.
    7. Guest speakers are accommodated first on the agenda when possible.
    8. Members must be committed to collaboration and believe in consensus.
    9. Members have the right and responsibility to participate.
    10. Dissenting members need to share their concerns and offer an alternative solution.
    11. Discussion should be limited to approximate agenda times except when a consensus of the members elects to: table, send to committee, or extend discussion with time limits.
    12. Agenda items should have a brief closure.
