Spelling Bee FAQs

  •

What format are the online preliminaries?
The online preliminary is a 25-word vocabulary and 25-word spelling test completed through School Champion.

Is there a particular time that my student needs to take the preliminary test between Feb. 20-24?
No, students can take it at any time. We recommend that an adult serves as a proctor.

What can I do to prepare my student for the preliminaries?
There is a practice test on School Champion that gives students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the format, however, it does not have any of the words on the test.

What words should my student study for the El Paso Regional Bee?
The competition will begin with words found in Words of the Champions, the official study resource for the regional bee and list of 4,000 study words. As the competition progresses, the source of words will likely shift to Merriam-Webster Unabridged.

When will I know if my student advances to the finals of the El Paso Regional Bee?
Finalists will be announced the week of Feb. 27 on spellingbee.com.

What’s the best way to reach someone with the El Paso Regional Bee?
Email epbee@episd.org. There are several people checking the email, so it is the best and quickest way to get an answer.

What happens if my system gets stuck or something happens to disrupt progress on the test?
Go to spellingbee.com/contact for any technical issues. We don’t have tools here at the El Paso Regional Bee to help.

My student got a word to spell that wasn’t in the Words of Champions study guide.
As the competition progresses, the source of words will likely shift to Merriam-Webster Unabridged.
