Message from Superintendent Diana Sayavedra
Dear El Paso ISD:
We are heading into the final week before October intersession. It has been a fast-paced and highly productive start to the school year, and I know we will finish in strong fashion before we take a much-needed break.
This week presented opportunities to listen.
Whether it was while visiting with the El Paso ISD Council of PTAs, the El Paso Neighborhood Coalition, the principal advisory council and during public comments delivered during our regular Board of Trustees meeting, hearing valuable feedback from stakeholders is critical to nurturing a culture of excellence.
As we strive to build a culture of excellence in all we do, we are always looking for ways to improve. Part of that process involves listening to the input provided by members of our campus communities and beyond.
We hear you! And we take everything you share with us into consideration when we make decisions meant to enhance the learning experiences of our students.
After all, holding a light to our students’ talents is why we are here. This week, we showcased some of that talent in our El Paso ISD fine arts gallery at district headquarters. The "HeARTs that Heal” exhibition – a collection of works depicting student representations of the healing powers of art – kicked off Tuesday with an opening reception. I encourage you to check out pieces prepared by our artistically gifted students from across the district which will be on display through Nov. 4.
Our students are placed on the road to success by our teachers. At El Paso ISD, we are fortunate to have devoted educators who can harness the talents our students arrive with in the classroom and guide them to new heights. Two such teachers were recognized this week when they were paid a surprise visit by Tony the Tiger and representatives of the Sun Bowl Association as part of the College Football Playoff Foundation’s Extra Yard for Teachers campaign.
Amy Martinez Perez, the district’s Elementary Teacher of the Year from Don Haskins PK-8; and Andreana Harkless, the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year from MacArthur PK-8; were met at their campuses and presented with gifts from Sun Bowl Association President Bernie Olivas. They were also notified that they will be recognized during the nation’s second-oldest bowl game Friday, Dec. 30, in Sun Bowl Stadium. A wonderful honor for two exemplary teachers!
As you look ahead to the October break, remember the importance of self-care and take the time to participate in the activities that bring you joy.
It Starts With Us!
Sincerely,
Diana Sayavedra
