A Message from Diana Sayavedra

Dear El Paso ISD,

Registration for the 2024-2025 academic year opened this week! You can now enroll your child in any of the vast array of exceptional academic programs available in El Paso’s District. Visit our School Finder page if you want to learn more about what options are available near you. Let’s start next year off on the right foot! Find additional information at

The first week of April brought the continuation of my visits to faculty meetings at campuses throughout the district. I thoroughly enjoy engaging with teachers and staff during these stops. The enthusiasm and commitment they bring to their roles is palpable, and I am grateful for the valuable feedback they offer to enhance our district’s operations.

It's important to continually recognize the crucial role our campus teachers and staff play in shaping the lives of our students. This week, some of our district’s best learned that they are among the top 10 finalists for the 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Personnel of the Year awards. These individuals exemplify excellence and dedication, representing the very best of our district’s educators and support staff. Thank you to our outstanding finalists, and to the entirety of our district’s teachers and campus personnel, for your commitment to inspiring and empowering learners to thrive.

Along with teachers and staff, El Paso ISD also marked National School Librarian Day (April 4) and National Assistant Principals Week (April 1-5).

All our personnel will be key as we begin STAAR testing next week. Please ensure your child gets adequate sleep and maintains a healthy diet to support their concentration and stamina during testing. Your partnership in preparing our students for success is invaluable, and we appreciate your support in this endeavor. Watch for updates on testing dates and procedures from your campus.

El Paso ISD athletes are shining:

•  The Burges High School boys soccer team faces Denton Ryan at 4:30 p.m. today in Wichita Falls in the UIL Class 5A Region I semifinal. A win puts Burges in position to win the regional title and advance to the state Final Four. Go, Mustangs!

• Students participating in our renowned Kickstart Kids program will showcase their skills this weekend during a spring competition at Capt. Gabriel L. Navarrete Middle School. The success of the martial arts program is evident and something we’ve been excited about all year. Keep your eye out for updates as we actively work to expand Kickstart to new campuses next year.

• Two members of the El Paso ISD community — Patsy Norman Brunson, a six-time state champion runner from El Paso High School, and Irvin High School Principal Bobby Stives, an accomplished bowler and Rocket alum — were named nominees to enter the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2024.

• David Cervantes, El Paso ISD director of athletics, was re-appointed as Region 4 director of the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association, continuing his service to advance high school athletics in the El Paso area and West Texas.

El Paso ISD community members met a trio of candidates hoping to be appointed to the District 3 Trustee seat during a candidate forum Tuesday at Austin High School. If you missed the event, you can watch the replay here. The Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 11, to appoint the new District 3 representative by majority vote.

On Monday, El Paso ISD students will return to campuses with the opportunity to check out a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thanks to the generous donation of Buc-ee’s and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, our students will be able to safely view the solar eclipse with specialized glasses. The rare event begins at 11:09 a.m. and will peak at 12:25 p.m. Let’s (safely) keep our eyes skyward.

The sky is the limit at El Paso ISD. Let’s keep working together toward a bright future.

It starts with us.
