The following is a message from Interim Superintendent Vince Sheffield in regard to the District's plan for in person learning for the 2021-22 school year:
Dear EPISD Family,
I am excited to welcome students and staff back on campus to the 2021-22 school year! The return to in person learning will give us an opportunity to get reacquainted and moving forward in meeting the needs of our students.
I want to reassure you that the health, safety, and welfare of our students and staff are our top priority. We will continue our efforts to create learning and working environments that are as safe as possible by following our established protocols as well as directives from our local health authorities. We have developed an extensive Safe Return to School Plan, which may be accessed and reviewed at here.
Throughout the many opportunities we have had to speak to the EPISD community about the safe return to schools, two questions asked are: “Why is virtual learning not an option for students during the 2021-22 school year?” and “Are students and teachers required to wear face masks?”
Unlike the prior school year, the Texas Legislature did not authorize the continuation of remote learning in public schools for the 2021-22 school year. Therefore, EPISD and most school districts in Texas, are unable to provide a remote learning option. I share and understand the concern of some parents who may feel virtual learning is the best option for their families, but unfortunately that is not an option that is available for EPISD under current circumstances. Notwithstanding, we are fully prepared to provide engaging learning opportunities for all of our students. I encourage you to join us and allow your children to take part in the great offerings and programs we have available.
Governor Greg Abbot issued an executive order that prohibited governmental entities, including school districts, from requiring employees, students, or visitors from wearing masks. Therefore, mask wearing in EPISD facilities is at the discretion of each individual. We respect choices made by individuals in this regard.
As we head into the 2021-22 school year, we remain vigilant regarding the ongoing pandemic. We will continue to work with city and state partners to ensure our students, parents and employees are up to date on any important information and decision that impacts learning.
In the meantime, let’s make this school year the best one yet! I am excited about the opportunities that this new academic year brings.
Atentamente,
Vince Sheffield
Superintendente interino
