A Message from Diana Sayavedra

Dear El Paso ISD,

The memories we create within the walls of our schools have lasting significance. Each interaction we have with students leaves an indelible mark on their hearts and minds. This sentiment reverberated this week as I shared some of my own poignant memories during several faculty meetings at campuses throughout the district. El Paso ISD teachers undoubtedly recognize that their daily interactions with students are not just transactions of knowledge but investments in the future, seeding the memories that will accompany them for a lifetime. Thank you, teachers, for all you do.

The preservation of memories is cherished by students, too. That is evidenced by the handful of 2023 El Paso ISD high school yearbooks that were featured in Walsworth Yearbooks’ 10th volume of “Possibilities.” The annual compendium features exemplary work from yearbooks throughout the country. This year, El Paso High School received a prominent mention in the publication along with Austin, Burges, Chapin, Coronado, Franklin and Irvin. Congratulations to these yearbook teams!

El Paso ISD student musicians are enjoying multiple venues to showcase their talents. The two-day El Paso ISD Jazz Festival concludes today at Coronado High School. The competition provided a platform for young musicians to demonstrate their creativity, improvisation and technical proficiency in a jazz setting. Next week, the El Paso ISD Fine Arts Middle School Orchestra Concert and Sightreading Evaluation begins a two-day run Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Andress High School Play on!

Our student-athletes are in the midst of state-title pursuits:

• On the mat, 13 El Paso ISD wrestlers are vying for gold medals at the UIL Wrestling State Championships. The competition at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas, concludes Saturday.

• Two of our girls basketball teams are competing in the area playoffs today. Good luck to Burges and El Paso High this afternoon as they take the floor in Fort Stockton, Texas.

• El Paso ISD boys basketball teams laid claim to district championships in three classes this week. Congratulations to our district title winners — Bowie (District 1-4A), Chapin (1-5A) and Franklin (1-6A). The bi-district playoffs begin next week.

Good luck to all of our teams!

A reminder to help us understand your perceptions of school culture and overall climate across our schools by taking part in a short survey. Your feedback is critical as we work toward creating enriching and supportive learning environments for every child. When we know better, we can do better. Click here to take the survey.

Before our board meeting Tuesday, Feb. 20, stop by the El Paso ISD Fine Arts Gallery for the “Celebrating African American Contributions to Fine Arts” art show and awards ceremony. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. See the splendid work of our student-artists on display!

Let’s get ready for another great week. There are only 10 more school days before spring break. Adelante, together!
