El Paso ISD schools to play football games at Sun Bowl
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Sept. 7, 2022) – A pair of football games featuring El Paso ISD schools will be played in iconic Sun Bowl Stadium during the next two weeks of the high school football season.
The action begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, when West Side rivals Coronado (1-1) and Franklin (1-1) take the field for a District 1-6A game. The Cougars are coming off a win against Andress while the Thunderbirds are looking to bounce back after a loss at home against Canutillo. Franklin and Coronado first played in 1995 at Thunderbird Stadium.
On Sept. 16, Jefferson (2-0) and Bowie (1-1) renew a long-standing South Side rivalry in the Sun Bowl in a non-district matchup. The Silver Foxes and Bears are one of the city’s oldest rivalry series, having first played in 1949. This year’s edition of the matchup will kick off at 7 p.m. Jefferson won its most recent game at Irvin, 31-14. Bowie defeated Horizon 31-20 amid a weekend celebrating the school’s 100th year of existence.
El Paso ISD schools have played in games at the stadium on the UTEP campus for more than 15 years. The Sun Bowl is not only home to the UTEP football team, but also the site of the annual Sun Bowl game, the country’s second-oldest bowl game.
