350 Chapin Huskies earn diplomas Monday at Don Haskins Center
(CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL – June 6, 2022) – Chapin High Huskies crossed the stage at the Don Haskins Center Monday for El Paso ISD’s second ceremony on graduation day 3.
Earning nearly $20 million in scholarships, the Huskies are led by valedictorian Zachary Magdaleno, who also holds the titles of All-Chapin boy and senior class president. He is followed by salutatorian Skyler Quiros.
Magdaleno’s remarks centered around his classmates’ perseverance in the face of the pandemic and post-pandemic challenges.
“The tenacious attitude of the class allowed us to hit the ground running, rebuilding relationships with one another and making every senior event memorable,” Magdaleno said. “This strong determination to persevere in the face of any challenge and reclaim our senior year embodies the spirit of Captain John L. Chapin and establishes our role as the pioneers of this post-pandemic world.”
Quiros remarks touched on the theme ‘so what have you learned?’ – a mantra that focused not just on academic knowledge but the wisdom to be successful in the future.
“The most important lesson I learned was that none of us has to be the smartest person in the room,” Quiros said. “We don’t have to have the highest grades or the best SAT score. We just have to try and be better than we were. Hard work and dedication are much more important qualities that will guide us in life and serve us well in difficult times.”
Quiros is one of four Chapin seniors to receive a prestigious military academy appointment this year – the most of any El Paso ISD high school. She will join fellow Husky Kayla Morales at the U.S. Air Force Academy while Gisselle Vega will be heading to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Frederick Chang will go to the U.S. Naval Academy.
