Message from Superintendent Diana Sayavedra
Dear El Paso ISD:
This week marked the start of National Principals Month. Our El Paso ISD principals set the academic tone and culture for our schools. Thank you for the work that you do. Your vision and dedication help empower and inspire our students to thrive.
It was a great week for our district. Our El Paso ISD marching bands performed wonderfully during the 2022 EPISD Fine Arts Marching Invitational last weekend at Franklin High School. The Jefferson/Silva, Franklin and Coronado bands each earned 1 Division awards. Additionally, the Burges Colorguard, Bowie percussion and Coronado percussion all earned outstanding division recognitions. Congratulations to our talented performers!
El Paso ISD schools excelled on the court as well. Austin (District 1-4A), El Paso (1-5A), and Coronado (1-6A) claimed district championships in team tennis last week. They will be joined by Burges, Chapin, Coronado and Jefferson as El Paso ISD representatives in the bi-district round of the state playoffs next week. Good luck to all of our teams!
One of the joys of public education is paving a path for young people to reach their dreams. Education is the opportunity equalizer, and as educators, we are obligated to provide our students with the possibility of a better future. It was great to talk about our mission during this week’s State of Education town hall hosted by the El Paso Chamber at the Starlight Event Center. I joined the superintendents of the Socorro and Ysleta school districts to discuss vital topics such as the impact of state policies on education, teacher recruitment, school security and more. I was grateful for the chance to share a platform with El Paso’s public-school leaders and know we will move our city forward together.
One of the ways we move forward is through community input. We value the feedback that is shared with us and utilize it when making decisions. In that vein, we want to know what our El Paso ISD community thinks about the two types of academic calendars (traditional and intersession). Share your thoughts with us by Oct. 28 through a survey. We will use your input to chart our district’s course in the years ahead. Survey is available here.
The district will be closed the week of Oct. 10-14. Take the time to engage with friends and family to partake in all the things you enjoy. When we take care of ourselves, we are better equipped to take care of others. I look forward to seeing you rested and invigorated when we return Oct. 17. When you come back, be on the lookout for opportunities to take part in yoga classes and other fun activities as part of our Healthy Living initiative.
If you need a weekend diversion, join me at our El Paso ISD Night with the Locomotive on Saturday, Oct. 8, for the team’s season finale at Southwest University Park. For information and specially priced tickets, go to https://bit.ly/episd_loco
As always, thank you to our faculty, staff, students and parents for all you do.
It Starts With Us!
Sincerely,
Diana Sayavedra
