Backpacks from Khalid on the first day of school
(TERRACE HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL -- Aug. 12, 2019) — An organization founded and led by El Paso superstar Khalid visited Terrace Hills on the first day of school to hand out more than 150 fully-stocked backpacks to sixth-graders.
The gift is part of The Great Khalid Foundation’s efforts to create and support an atmosphere of care and support for kids so that they can dream big.
Linda Wolfe, Khalid’s mom, personally handed every single backpack, standing in for her son who is currently on tour. Giving back to the community and seeing the grateful smiles brought her “pure joy.”
“My child has a platform that he can do this,” Wolfe said of her multiple platinum recording-artist son. “It's important to him because he loves the 915 and loves children. Seeing this and knowing we can impact the community like this brings us joy.”
Wolfe spoke to the students prior to the giveaway seeking volunteers from the crowd to come dance or sing to “Young Dumb and Broke” – her son’s second single from his debut American Teen album.
“I like Khalid’s music. It’s soothing,” said Fabian Granados, who showed off his moves to the hit song. “My favorite song from Khalid is ‘Talk.’”
Fabian was touched by the sincerity of his idol and his love for giving back. “It makes me feel like all of us are special,” he said.
Throughout the event, Khalid’s hits subtly playing in the background getting the sixth graders revved up for the giveaway as they noticeably sang the tunes.
“O-M-G a superstar is giving me a backpack,” said Lucy Goviea, already toting her pink backpack. “It’s like beyond exciting.”
She’s a huge fan and likes that the singer is “just himself” adding that he also is “really cute.” Lucy’s classmates echoed her excitement – cheering on the Great Khalid Foundation and showing lots of love for the Foundation and its connection to the young singer who’s made it big in the music industry.
“It’s an amazing experience our community,” said principal Leticia Ewing. “We are so grateful for the Khalid Foundation and this opportunity. It is incredibly meaningful to our students to receive these supplies from their idol.”
