(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Nov. 16, 2021) — Read Across the District, the El Paso Independent School District’s annual literacy event that encourages students and educators to pick up a book and read for 30 minutes, is happening this Friday in classrooms all over.
Read Across the District, or RAD, brings together students, teachers and their families to further develop a love of reading with fun literacy activities that include themed parties, guest readers and special visits to libraries.
The official kick off for the 2021 edition of RAD will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, at the new Don Haskins PK-8 School, 500 Mulberry. District officials, cheerleaders, band member and special guests will help start the reading festivities in front of fourth- and fifth-grade students right at 10 a.m.
Parents and community members also can follow along the festivities via a live stream at www.episd.org/live.
EPISD started RAD in 2014 when it combined the literacy initiative with District goals to engage the community. Campuses throughout EPISD invite civic leaders, business partners, celebrity readers and other volunteers to their schools to read to students in younger grades. In middle and high schools, students participate by having teachers encourage the use of digital or paper reading materials during the 30-minute event.
