Let Freedom Ring: Logan celebrates Constitution Day with bells
(LOGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- Sept. 18, 2018) — The 231st birthday of the U.S. Constitution was celebrated on Monday with the ringing of 600 bells at Logan, whose students joined others throughout the country to mark this special day.
The school welcomed representatives from the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to give tiny bells to each student to celebrate and learn the importance of the rights guaranteed in the constitution.
Celebrations this week also will include classroom activities with more in-depth lessons on the constitution.
“This is a good way for the students to learn more about the constitution,” said Logan Military Liaison Tracy Beach, who coordinated the event. “It is part of the curriculum, but actually coming out here and being able to ring the bells as a whole entire school and with everybody else in America … it is more significant for our kids.”
Students sat with their legs crossed on the field, each wearing a bracelet with a small symbolic bell around their wrist while representatives from Daughters of the American Revolution spoke about the importance of the constitution and what it means for Americans.
“Our children need to know that their forefathers worked hard to form the constitution so that they had the freedom to speak for their country,” said Sandra Balliet, a regent for the local chapter of the organization. “This event signals the beginning of Constitution Week in 2018. Working with Logan is an effort to promote the importance of the Constitution to our children.”
The event ended with the students ringing their bells virtually at the same time as the rest of the nation’s bells sounded.
“We’re out here ringing our bells to celebrate our constitution,” said fifth-grader Denise Rodriguez, her bell still wrapped around her wrist. “Without it, we wouldn’t have our rights.”
