EPISD counselor named Counselor of the Year by Scottish Rite
Susan Crews, a lead counselor in EPISD's Counseling, Guidance and College Readiness Department, was named Counselor of the Year by the El Paso Valley Scottish Rite, which covers regions all the way to Lubbock.
The organization, which is part of a large healthcare-centric philanthropic group, presented Crews with the award during a ceremony in Lubbock in November.
"I was greatly surprised and honored as I was not aware I was being considered for this award," Crews said. "It is positive reinforcement for the job I have done and the profession I love."
Crews was selected for the positive impact she has had on children in the El Paso area over the last 50 years as a counselor, including the last 17 years at EPISD.
The organization recognized her role in the establishment of social and emotional interventions that have benefited countless children in the region.
Although Crews was happy to be recognized, her true joy comes from the job she has dedicated her life to. She has been a certified professional school counselor at each grade level and has worked as a counselor educator at the University of Texas at El Paso, as well as the College of Santa Fe.
"The biggest reward that I receive as a professional school counselor is realized everyday when I see my students, clients and interns look at the real issues that may be plaguing them and then discovering the tools they need to move past their pain and confusion into a place of hope and possibility again," Crews said. "I believe in counseling and have seen it work during the last 50 years in El Paso for adults and youth alike."
