Cabrera appointed to TASA executive positions
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Sept. 30, 2019) — EPISD Superintendent Juan E. Cabrera will serve on the 2019-20 Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Commissioner’s Superintendent Advisory Cabinet and the TASA Legislative Committee, the organization recently announced.
TASA is the professional association for Texas school administrators, providing networking and professional learning opportunities, legislative advocacy, and targeted communications to support the work of superintendents and other school leaders.
“I look forward to representing El Paso and the Border communities on these highly-influential boards,” Cabrera said. “I plan to bring our collective voices to the table to shape national and state education policy and put into practice the strategies and policies that will benefit our students and employees.”
The TASA Commissioners Superintendent Advisory Cabinet is made up of 20 regional representatives and four at-large members who are selected by Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath and TASA Executive Director Kevin Brown to help vet and guide discussion on important public-education matters. Cabrera has served on the cabinet for two years.
The TASA Legislative Committee develops and advises the Executive Committee and staff on legislative and state policy issues.
Cabrera has served as EPISD Superintendent since 2013 and helped the District transition from a state-appointed Board of Managers to an elected Board of Trustees. Under his leadership, the District approved the largest bond referendum in El Paso County history and created innovative academic programming that has transformed teaching and learning in El Paso.
“The El Paso ISD journey to turnaround a state-operated district into a district known for its innovation in the classroom is something of which we are all proud,” Cabrera said. “This turnaround and the work our teachers and students have done allows me to represent them at the state and national level and to bring our unique perspective into the conversation.”
TASA also announced Cabrera will serve as a mentor in the First-Time Superintendents Academy, a program designed support first- and second-year superintendents throughout Texas.
