Champions by Design Conference welcomes administrators to 2021-22 school year
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- July 14, 2021) — EPISD kicked off the 2021-22 school year on Wednesday at Franklin High School at the Champions by Design conference – the first live gathering of principals since the start of the pandemic.
Drumlines, mascots and cheerleaders from middle and high schools cheered on administrators walking up to the theater for the opening session of the two-day conference. The warm welcome led up to the first general session followed by breakout sessions focused on planning, effective school framework and campus sharing.
“Champions By Design is our administrator’s conference for principals and assistant principals,” said Kathy Seufert, Director of Staff Development. “They are going to be planning out a solid start to the school year. The sessions are about how we are going to be able to organize for effort including running PLCs and getting kids in right classes and really working together as an administrative team.”
The opening session featured fine arts director Phillip Barraza giving a comical review of last year’s pandemic-ridden school year – reminiscing about Zoom and mute buttons, COVID weight gain and other challenges students and staff overcame to get through the year. His opening led up to a sneak peek of the districtwide summer musical production of “Beauty and the Beast,” which will be staged July 21-24 at Bowie High School.
“It felt great to gather with all of our administrators after more than a year of meetings on Zoom because we are better together,” Seufert said. “But best of all, it was wonderful to see kids again. Those greeting and performing for us made today’s event extra special.”
