El Paso ISD Superintendent, volunteers visit 185 families for Bowie Nation Show Up, You Matter attendance campaign

(BOWIE HIGH SCHOOL – Jan. 14, 2023) – El Paso ISD Superintendent Diana Sayavedra hit the streets Saturday morning to talk to students and parents in the Segundo Barrio for the Bowie Nation Show Up, You Matter attendance campaign.

Sayavedra joined with teams of volunteers to visit 185 parents of students in the Bowie feeder pattern with excessive absences. The visits allowed the El Paso ISD volunteers to get to know students, learn about the obstacles they face, and discuss resources and solutions to bring them back to the classroom. It is part of a districtwide effort to enhance attendance at El Paso ISD campuses. Other feeder patterns will or already have engaged in similar home visits this year. In addition, the district is regularly recognizing schools that have the highest percentages in attendance. Winners in the categories of elementary, PK-8, middle and high schools, as well as a rising star category, have been highlighted throughout the year on the district’s social media channels.

“Attendance is the No. 1 predictor of student success,” Sayavedra said. “Our Show Up, You Matter campaign sends a message that we care. We want to hear from you and hear what we can do better to get you in school.”

The volunteers visited students from Bowie High School, Guillen Middle School and Douglass, Hart and Aoy elementary schools. They left them with a backpack with school supplies and important numbers and information on outreach programs, social services and other resources to help bring them back to school.
