El Paso ISD athletes bring home state swim, wrestling titles

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Feb. 20, 2023) — El Paso ISD student-athletes turned in championship performances this weekend during state competition in wrestling and swimming, with three individual grapplers and two aquatic relay teams claiming gold medals. 

In wrestling, a trio of girls won individual state titles at the UIL state wrestling meet, which took place Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas. They included:

• Jubilee Rendon, Franklin High School, Class 6A 100-pound division

• Keilani Guillermo, Chapin High School, Class 5A 132-pound division

• Leilani Sanchez, Andress High School, Class 5A 235-pound division 

Other El Paso ISD wrestlers who received medals at the state meet included:

• Joy Jackson, Burges High School, Class 5A girls 126-pound division, sixth place

• Joy Ortiz, Chapin High School, Class 5A girls 145-pound division, third place

• Braulio Estrada, Franklin High School, Class 6A boys 113-pound division, fourth place

• Ian Abdallah, Franklin High School, Class 6A boys 120-pound division, second place

In swimming, the El Paso High School boys quartet of Holden Convertino, Zev Benjamin, Denny Adams and Marcos Otero claimed a pair of relay gold medals in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle races during competition Feb. 17-18 at the UIL state swimming and diving meet at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. The wins helped the Tigers to a fourth-place team finish behind Georgetown, Frisco Wakeland and Friendswood.

Otero won two individual medals at the meet as well. He swam to a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and was third in the 100-yard backstroke.
