Bowie High School soccer players will participate in Segundo Barrio Futbol Club Charity Cup match
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Feb. 23, 2023) — Members of the Bowie High School boys soccer team will take the field for a charitable cause Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, during the Segundo Barrio Futbol Club’s (SBFC) Charity Cup game at Guillen Middle School, 900 S. Cotton St.
The exhibition match — which kicks off at noon at the historic campus on the southeastern fringe of El Paso’s Segundo Barrio — pits the Bears, who are members of the SBFC, against a team comprised of prominent El Pasoans including El Paso ISD Board Trustee Leah Hanany, El Paso city Rep. Chris Canales and Telemundo news anchor Carlos Sanchez.
The exhibition match is one of the chief fundraising events hosted by the SBFC, an organization led by volunteers that seeks to use soccer to foster positive physical, mental and emotional growth for boys and girls ages 8-18 in Segundo Barrio. The club serves approximately 150 young players and has seen many Bowie players flow through its rosters since its inception in 2011.
“We believe soccer is a tool for social change,” said Simon Chandler, executive director of the SBFC and coordinator of community schools for El Paso ISD. “The Charity Cup match offers a great showcase for the Segundo Barrio Futbol Club and also offers a glimpse into the tight-knit community we have in this part of El Paso. El Paso ISD students thrive because of these opportunities to play a game they love and they are able to leverage it to advance their academic and professional pursuits.”
