(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Feb. 27, 2023) — The state’s No. 18-ranked Chapin High School boys basketball team will face Parkland High School in the regional quarterfinal round of the UIL Class 5A state playoffs Tuesday in an iconic setting — the Don Haskins Center.  

The Huskies (28-6, 15-0 in District 1-5A) will tip-off at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, against the Matadors (26-8, 9-1 in District 2-5A) in the 11,892-seat venue, located on the University of Texas at El Paso campus. Tickets cost $6 for adults, $4 for students and are available on the El Paso ISD tickets page.  

“It is extremely special for our guys to play in this game against one of our Northeast rivals. It’s huge for our Northeast community and for the city of El Paso,” Chapin head coach Rodney Lewis said. “I believe that every high school kid in El Paso should want to play in the Don Haskins Center. It is a great venue named after a legend and Hall of Famer. Our guys know the history of UTEP and Coach Haskins, so, they will always cherish this moment.”   

The Huskies, who are No. 18 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches top 25 poll, arrived at the regional quarterfinal round by defeating Amarillo Palo Duro 82-62 in the area round Friday. Parkland, which is part of the Ysleta Independent School District, reached the regional quarterfinal round after a 65-55 win against Amarillo Tascosa in the area round Friday.  

Gates for the contest will open at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. All UTEP facilities policies will apply including requirements for clear bags and no balloons allowed in the building.   

The Don Haskins Center is home to the Miner men’s and women’s basketball teams. UTEP's men's basketball team holds a storied position in the sport’s history as the 1966 edition was the first to win an NCAA championship with an all-Black starting lineup. The feat is chronicled in the 2006 film, “Glory Road.”
