Ready to help: Silva students get emergency-response training
(SILVA HEALTH MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL -- Jan. 31, 2020) — Silva Health Magnet students put their disaster relief skills to the test this week during an earthquake disaster simulation that requiring skills in fire safety, search and rescue and medical operations.
The event was the culmination of the students’ completion of their Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The students learned the intricacies of responding to an array of disasters used these skills during the drill. Jefferson/Silva theater students made the scene even more real, playing the role of victims who were rescued and triaged.
“I didn’t know that the community could have such on impact on helping,” said Silva student Jose Anaya. “I always thought this was just for the professionals. It’s very cool that we could do so much.”
Silva partnered with the El Paso Office of Emergency Management to put the event together. Now more than 150 Silva students are CERT certified.
“It was definitely an experience,” said Silva student Erika Martinez. “But all the training we got helped.”
