Young Women's Academy student wins EPISD Spanish Spelling Bee
(CHAPIN HIGH SCHOOL -- March 12, 2020) — More than 30 elementary- and middle-school students from every corner of the District gathered here earlier this week to show their mastery of the Spanish language during the 2020 EPISD Spanish Spelling and Grammar Bee, or the Concurso de Deletreo y Ortografía de EPISD.
Marium Zahara of the Young Women's STEAM Research & Preparatory Academy emerged as the winner of the tournament after successfully spelling the word "septuagenario," or septuagenarian, in the sixth round.
Second place went to Mitzi Bond Elementary School's Raphaella Castro Correa who went toe-to-toe with Marium and provided great competition throughout the bee.
Marium and Raphaella have both qualified for the National Spelling Bee in Denver in July.
Judges for the local bee were KINT-TV anchor Hector Urrutia, Armida Trejo from National Education System Publishing, Maritza Delgado from the Mexican Consulate in El Paso and journalist Patricia Giovine. The word pronouncer was Gustavo Perez.
