EPISD makes principal appointments
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- July 30, 2020) — The District today announced the appointment of new principals for several campuses in preparation for the 2020-2021 academic year that begins on Aug. 17.
“Principals play a key role in the success of every school, and we know we have selected outstanding educators to lead these campuses,” said Superintendent Juan E. Cabrera. “I am confident that their experience and commitment will help our students and teachers reach unprecedented goals, even as the pandemic alters the way we provide services to our community.”
EPISD announced the appointment of the following principals:
- Monica Lyons at Guillen Middle School. Lyons had served as interim principal at Guillen and now assumes the role on a permanent basis. She has nearly 30 years of experience in public education and is a University of Texas at El Paso graduate.
- Maria Guerra at Cielo Vista Elementary School. Guerra previously served as principal at Douglass Elementary School. She has more than 20 years of experience in public education and is a UTEP graduate.
- Alonzo Barraza at Douglass Elementary School. Barraza was the principal at Crosby Elementary and previously served as principal at Douglass. He has 25 years of experience in public education and is a UTEP graduate.
- Hillery Smith at Rivera Elementary School. Smith previously served as assistant principal at Putnam Elementary School and was named the 2020 Region 19 Assistant Principal of the Year. She has more than 20 years of experience in public education and is a UTEP graduate.
- Kathleen Ese at Dr. Joseph Torres Elementary. Ms. Ese was the principal at Bradley Elementary School and will now lead the new Torres Elementary. She has nearly 20 years of experience in education and is a UTEP graduate.
- Peggy Gustafson at Morehead Middle School. Ms. Gustafson had served as interim principal at Morehead and Johnson Elementary School and now will focus on the middle school as the permanent administrator. She has more than 30 years of experience in education and is a graduate of the University of North Dakota, UTEP and New Mexico State University.
- Luz Perez as interim at Johnson Elementary, where she has served as assistant principal. She is a graduate of UTEP and Sul Ross State University.
