Dallas Cowboys coaches help EPISD student athletes improve skills
(EL PASO HIGH SCHOOL -- April 2, 2019) — Dozens of El Paso’s top high-school football prospects gathered at El Paso High this weekend to get one-on-one tips from the coaches and players of the Dallas Cowboys.
The third annual Dallas Cowboys Clinic sponsored by the Texas Lottery brought together student athletes from every high school in the El Paso Independent School District to learn straight from the source the skills and techniques the pros are using in the National Football League.
“We are now on our third year at the we have had great success. We love to come out and watch the talent that is out here in EPISD,” said Hunter Harvin, the Cowboys’ manager of corporate partnerships. “Our coaches talk to them about the skills – both on and off the field – that they will need to compete at the next level.”
Historic Jones Stadium — with the beautiful Trost-designed El Paso High campus as a backdrop—hosted the event once again.
For the first time in three years, the camp extended an invitation to players from the Ysleta Independent School District. Harvin said the mix of students gave a great insight into the talent pool in El Paso.
William Garcia, a junior at Franklin High School, said he was thankful to have access to top-notch coaching from the Cowboys.
“I want to better understand the fundamentals and improve my skills as a player,” Garcia said. “I want to show my fullest potential and compete at a higher level.”
The players got tips not just from coaches, but also from actual players. La’el Collins, offensive tackle for the Cowboys, spent the entire day working with the students.
“I hope they learned and saw that El Paso has a lot of talent,” Chapin High School junior Michael Smith.
