Lincoln Middle student wins first place at Texas Science & Engineering Fair
(LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL -- April 16, 2021) — A love for cooking helped Lincoln sixth grader Duke Griñé take the first place in this year’s Texas State Science & Engineering Fair.
Duke’s project, titled “I’m in a Pickle” earned the top award in middle-school biochemistry category.
“I am so proud to have received this first place in biochemistry science for the State of Texas,” he said. “It is a great honor, and I am so happy and grateful for this achievement.”
Duke’s inspiration for the for the entry was his passion for cooking.
“I love to cook so I wanted to conduct a science experiment in the kitchen,” he said. “I am very interested in pickling foods and how pickled foods can be important and necessary in parts of the world with food shortages and refrigeration and food preservation struggles.”
His project involved pickling different vegetables using a basic salt brine and comparing the rates at which the different vegetables pickled.
“I found that celery absorbed the most salt, followed by jalapeños and carrots, which representative of their ability to absorb the salt and be preserved,” Duke said.
Other EPISD students also placed in the state science and engineering fair.
Lincoln’s Joaquin Martinez took second place in the Earth and Environmental Sciences middle school category and Franklin High’s Anysha Choudhuri took second place in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines high school category. Anysha also received the Govenor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy award.
