Wiggs students wear heels to fight domestic violence
(WIGGS MIDDLE SCHOOL -- Oct. 23, 2019) — Six Wiggs Wolverines put all teenage notions of machismo aside, put on a pair of high heels and joined hundreds of other El Paso men in the 2019 edition of the YWCA’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march last week.
The annual march asks men to raise money by offering to take a stroll through the streets of Downtown El Paso wearing high heels. The proceeds benefit the YWCA El Paso Del Norte Region’s Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center, which serves survivors of domestic violence.
This year, the march included students from Wiggs Middle School. Participating were Nikhil Haribhai, John Ruhmann, Jack Nance, Aaron Mosher, Caleb Lawhon and Austin Slagel.
“These young men are a great example of the type of student we have at Wiggs and in EPISD,” said Principal Tim Luther. “They exemplify the spirit of EPISD Proud.”
According to the YWCA, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is the international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence. Men are asked to wear heels to give them a symbolic idea of what it is to be a victim of domestic and gender-based violence.
