Bowie hopes to cultivate interest in garden during annual Jardín y Cocina Saturday

Bowie Jardin

(BOWIE HIGH SCHOOL – May 17, 2022) – The annual Jardín y Cocina Saturday at Bowie High School provides students and the community an opportunity to take free workshops and see live demonstrations to learn about garden resources in their own backyard.

The Bowie agriculture and culinary students are teaming up to present the garden-to-table expo – from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on campus. Experts including Master Gardeners will be offering the workshops and demonstrations.

“We would like to educate the community on how to grow their own food in their backyards,” said Georgia Odom, Bowie agriculture teacher.  “We are providing free gardening education, tools, seeds and plants for the event.”

Presentations include information on native plants, growing vegetables, landscapes, gardening strategies, desert gardening, creative cooking and canning with fresh vegetables. Demonstrations on composting, planting seedlings, vegetable propagation, organic pest control techniques and increasing soil fertility also will be offered.

“I hope this Garden-to-Table Expo will inspire people to at least try, and maybe some will find a passion for gardening,” Odom said.
