EPISD principal tapped to help TEA update state science curriculum
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Jan. 10, 2020) — The Texas State Board of Education is looking to an EPISD principal to help update and modernize the science component of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the state curriculum often referred to as TEKS.
Dr. Cynthia Ontiveros, the principal at the Young Women's STEAM Research & Preparatory Academy and Armendariz Middle School, was selected as one of nine state educators to serve as content advisors for the 2019 review and revision of the TEKS. She is the only El Pasoan to be selected.
Ontiveros was tapped as an expert in science education and research. She was nominated by State Board of Education Member Georgina Perez.
Ontiveros has been an officer in the Texas Science Education Leadership Association and is the co-author of "Copper Stain: Asarco’s Legacy in El Paso." She has three degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso, including a Ph.D. in teaching, learning and culture.
