EPISD schools, facilities to get LED upgrades
(EL PASO INDEPENDEN SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Dec. 7, 2021) — Things are about to get a little brighter in classrooms throughout EPISD.
A new project to upgrade to light fixtures in the District to LED will see the light this January. The move is expected to generate more than $30.3 million in cumulative energy savings over 20 years.
The Board of Trustees approved the $13.3 million LED lighting upgrade project in October with Excel Energy Group. The project, which will pay for itself in about 9 years, will include 57 facilities going 100 percent LED lighting.
The project does not include newer facilities or buildings improved by the EPISD Bond since those already include LED lighting.
“EPISD is doing its part to lower its carbon footprint, while providing upgraded and equitable lighting and lighting structures throughout our district,” said maintenance director Ernest Ortiz. “The energy savings actualized after just over eight years make this project a true win-win.”
Highlights of the project include:
- Reducing light energy conception by an average 70 percent;
- Installing new LED systems rated to last 55,000 hours (20 years);
- Installation of occupancy sensors; eliminating material purchases and maintenance of lighting systems;
- Standardizing lighting systems throughout EPISD; and
- Installation of gym and exterior lighting.
The project also includes disposal and recycling of the older lighting structures.
“The new LED panels and lighting redesign will provide significant cosmetic improvements to the appearance of schools both outside and inside the classrooms,” Ortiz said. “We look forward to the installation of the new lighting and its positive impact on EPISD.”
