Chapin will meet Mansfield Summit in Class 5A Region I championship

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — March 3, 2023) — The Chapin High School boys basketball team outlasted Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt 69-68 in a thrilling double overtime contest Friday evening to advance to the UIL Class 5A Region I championship game against Mansfield Summit at noon CST Saturday at Kay Yeager Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The berth in the regional final marks the first time the Huskies reach the Elite 8 round of the state playoffs. Chapin (30-6), ranked No. 18 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, took the lead in the second overtime period after a bucket from junior Brandon Hymes with 10 seconds left. The No. 9 Chaparrals charged toward the other end, but a layup attempt from D.J. Thomas came up short as time expired, giving the Huskies the regional semifinal win.

Chapin will next face No. 11 Mansfield Summit. The Jaguars (30-5) were the District 8-5A champions and reached the regional final after defeating Amarillo 55-48 on Friday in the first game of the Region I tournament doubleheader.

Gates for the game will open at 11 a.m. Saturday. General admission tickets cost $10 and will be sold at the door. There will be no re-entry allowed. No noise-making devices, balloons or confetti will be allowed in the arena. Handheld signs are allowed.

Saturday’s winner will advance to the UIL Boys Basketball State Championships beginning Thursday, March 9, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
