EPISD seniors earn five of El Paso's six National Merit Scholarship semifinalist spots
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Sept. 9, 2020) — Five of El Paso’s six National Merit Scholarship semifinalists are EPISD students, the program announced on Wednesday.
Seniors from Coronado, El Paso and Franklin high schools are among the elite group of 16,000 nationwide semifinalists vying to for the prestigious scholarship. The EPISD students are:
- Taekyu Lee, Coronado
- Sri Lakshmi Muthyala, Coronado
- Jai J. Patel, Coronado
- Sergio Borunda, El Paso High
- Jack Himes, Franklin
These academically-talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.
