Alice in Wonderland inspired exhibit to help open new EPISD Fine Arts Gallery
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT -- Sept. 15, 2021) — EPISD Fine Arts’ first public art exhibit in the new gallery features the imaginative works of kinder through 12th grade students and their pint-size interpretation “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”
Opening reception for the “Miniature Adventures in Wonderland” will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the gallery inside the Administration Building, 1014 N. Stanton Street. The exhibit will run through Oct. 22 and is open to the public. Fine arts is encouraging visitors attending the opening reception to dress in an Alice- inspired costume to celebrate the theme and compete for a best costume prize.
“Our young EPISD artists have created a magical world, celebrating one of the most iconic and inspiring stories of all time,” said Rosa Aguilar, visual arts facilitator. “As you walk through the art exhibit, you will find yourself tumbling down the rabbit hole and embarking on a visual adventure where all-natural laws are questioned.”
This “Miniature Adventures in Wonderland” follows an exhibit closed to the public but open to employees that featured large-scale paintings by Franklin High teacher and muralist Juan Galceran. In the current exhibit, student artists created their masterpieces on canvases no bigger than eight inches – filling the gallery with a variety of interpretations of the classic that spans grade levels and skill sets.
“As you observe the artwork in this miniature scale, you get the feeling of being involved in a private or intimate conversation,” Aguilar said. “The small-scale paintings show surreal characters and their curious challenges, the race against clocks, the white rabbit's missing glove, the caterpillar's mind-bending riddles, the queen of hearts in a curious game of croquet and many more.”
