(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 24, 2024) — El Paso ISD is proud to recognize two seniors at Chapin High School who have been awarded the 2024 Gates Scholarship award.
Chapin High School seniors Archelaus Paxon and Angela Rivas were chosen from a pool of over 53,000 applicants from across the nation. Both students said they were ecstatic when they found out they were selected as the winners.
“I am planning to go to Texas A&M University and this full ride scholarship will help me get to where I want to be,” Paxon said. “I hope to one day work in the Biomedical Department with NASA because it combines two of my interests, space and biomedically engineering, and I think it would be really cool working on designs and innovations for them would be really cool for me.”
For Rivas, she plans to study medical anthropology when she attends her college in Rhode Island. “I enjoy medical anthropology, it’s a good mix of the science and medicine, but also it’s on the social side and how people interact with it,” Rivas said. “Taking the next step is satisfying for me because knowing that I have the support not only financially, but also, I have the support of my family, friends, and teachers and knowing that they have my back when I go on this journey.”
Both students had the same message for incoming high school freshmen: participate in after-school programs or extracurricular activities because it may benefit you in the future.
