(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 17, 2024) — Hawkins Elementary School is inspiring a new generation of readers.
On Wednesday, May 15, students at the campus took part in the “I Heart Reading” fair. It’s an annual tradition that started in 2013 but was halted over the last four years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event features the projects of students from as young as kindergarten. It’s like a science fair, but the students showcase a project about their favorite book through illustrations and writings and present them to judges who are a mixed bag of retired educators, counselors, and other El Paso ISD employees.
Some of the students dressed up like the main character from their favorite book as they presented their work to the judges. Each presentation was judged on the student’s summary, artwork, and explanation for why they loved the book.
“This event is good for the student’s listening, reading, writing, and even presentation skills,” said Hawkins Campus Reading Coach Laura Garcia. “Anything we can do to promote the love of reading is always a positive thing for us, and it gives the students a chance to share what they’ve learned during the semester.”
The top winners from each grade level scored a free book for their hard work.
