(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 10, 2024) — A pair of Burges High School students were named winners during the 2024 Congressional Art Competition, which was held Friday, May 3.

Luis Espinoza, a senior, won Best Portrait, and Italia Esquivel, a freshman, won second place overall for her piece, “My Roots.”

U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, hosted the reception at the El Paso Museum of Art. The office of Congresswoman Escobar received 111 submissions from more than 18 high schools throughout El Paso.

“I extend my deepest appreciation for the work so many have done to make this competition possible, from school administrators and encouraging teachers to the judges and supportive family members,” Congresswoman Escobar said.

This year represents the first collaboration between Escobar’s office and the El Paso Museum of Art, which will display the submitted artwork until Aug. 4.
