(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 25, 2024) — A host of El Paso ISD students are excelling in competitive events across the country.
Galilea Velasco, a junior at El Paso High School, qualified to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is scheduled May 11-17 in Los Angeles. Velasco is among four students from El Paso who will be competing at the big event and is 1 of 12 students from Texas who qualified to take part in it.
Velasco earned her spot after impressing judges in the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TXSEF). Her project, “Paper Trails – Using Cacti to make Paper Production More Sustainable” received recognition and earned her the Texas Master Naturalist Special Award. She was also awarded $500.
The TXSEF is one of the best middle and high school science and engineering competitions in the state and highlights the top biological science, physical science, and engineering projects throughout 21 categories.
Along with Velasco’s success, 17 additional El Paso ISD students advanced from the Regional Sun Country fair to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair event, which was held March 22-24. The students who were promoted include:
