(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 15, 2024) — Three El Paso ISD teachers and two of the district’s campuses are being recognized for their work and contributions to the educational experiences of students.
On Monday, April 15, organizers from the College Football Playoff Foundation, Bowl Season, and the Sun Bowl Association surprised two teachers from H.E. Charles Middle School and one teacher from Magoffin Middle School with $1,000 checks. It’s all part of a program called, “Extra Yard for Teachers,” which recognizes the work of teachers from across the country. The funds are to be used to support educators and students in the classroom.
Rosa Guillermo, the campus teaching coach at Charles Middle, was surprised she was one of the teachers who was selected to receive the funds.
“I feel like this could have gone to anyone of our amazing teachers at El Paso ISD,” Guillermo said. “It’s an honor to be selected, and I’m going to use the money to provide more reading materials for our students.”
Florangela Calderon, another teacher at Charles Middle, also was selected to receive the funds.
At Magoffin Middle, special education teacher Helen Rivera was the third teacher selected.
“This was a big surprise and unexpected, but I am very appreciative of everything,” Rivera said.
Additionally, the principals of both schools were surprised with a $5,000 award from the organizers.
“I’m appreciative of this award. It’s easy to be a good principal when you’ve got extraordinary teachers and outstanding people who work at Charles Middle,” Charles Middle Principal Nick DeSantis said. “One hundred percent of this money we received today will be going back to celebrate our great teachers.”
Magoffin Middle School’s principal echoed those sentiments.
“We’re very excited that we received this special donation,” Principal Yeni Ontiveros said. “This money will be put to good use for our teachers and students.”
