(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 10, 2024) — April is designated as the the Month of the Military Child, and on Tuesday, April 2, Franklin High School hosted a large gathering to celebrate and welcome military students and their families.
The event was organized by members of Franklin High School and the campus’ military family liaison.
“The ROTC students have been supportive of our event from day one and I just wanted a place where students with military background could interact with our service members,” said Giselle Pokorny, the military family liaison. “I also wanted each branch of the military to have an opportunity to interact with our students because they’re our role models and they can help guide the students in the right direction.”
Representatives from Fort Bliss attended the event and spoke to students, re-enforcing the relationship the U.S. Army post has with the community and surrounding areas. There was also live music, displays of military vehicles and booths with information about each branch of the military.
Students who attended the event said the party was a great way to recognize all the students who have military ties throughout the region.
“This event also shows people that the military isn’t just the Army, but we have the Marines, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard,” said Shania Fries, a student at Franklin High School.
El Paso ISD employs military family liaisons at schools with the highest numbers of military-connected students. Some of their duties include serving as point of contact and working collaboratively between military-connected students and their families and the campus, assisting in coordinating campus-based programs relevant to military-connected students, and more.
