(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 5, 2024) — Schools at El Paso ISD are giving students the opportunity to check out a once-in-a-lifetime event. 
 
Thanks to the generous donation of Buc-ee’s and the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS), El Paso ISD students will be able to safely view the historic solar eclipse with specialized glasses Monday, April 8.  
 
The Totality Over Texas program is an initiative created by Buc-ee's and will support HMNS’ mission to provide public K-12 schools in Texas with free solar eclipse viewing kits. 
 
A total solar eclipse will take place Monday morning, giving people in North America a chance to view the rare phenomenon that will darken afternoon skies. Solar eclipses happen when the moon passes between the earth and sun — casting a shadow on Earth. 
 
In El Paso, sky-gazers will have a chance to view the solar eclipse at 85% coverage. The rare event begins at 11:09 a.m. MDT and will peak at 12:25 p.m. The entire event will last approximately 2 hours, 35 minutes.  
 
El Paso ISD schools will provide educational opportunities for students to learn more about space and how to safely view the solar eclipse during the special occasion.
