(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Feb. 26, 2024) — The mariachi programs of four El Paso ISD high schools stood out at the 2024 UIL State Mariachi Festival over the weekend, with Franklin High School claiming the top honor.
Franklin, Coronado, Austin, and Chapin high schools all received acclaim and awards at the event, held from Feb. 22-24 in Seguin, Texas. Franklin secured a “Superior” rating and a first division trophy, highlighting its outstanding program. Austin, Chapin, and Coronado were each recognized with an “Excellence” rating.
Phillip Barraza, Director of Fine Arts for El Paso ISD, expressed pride in the students' achievements, stating, "We are proud of all our mariachi ensembles as we put El Paso ISD on the map at UIL State competitions. El Paso ISD Fine Arts keeps moving forward."
This marks the eighth year of the state mariachi contest and the fifth year as an official UIL competition.
