(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Jan. 25, 2024) — The contributions of a long-serving and active member of the Bowie High School community are being recognized.

Julieta McManus is a longtime booster and alumna of Bowie High School. She has served on the Bowie Alumni Association since 1976. Her partnership with her alma mater has spanned four decades and has helped provide high quality experiences to students through the sharing of the extensive knowledge she has gained throughout her years as an educator.

“It has been wonderful serving on the board,” McManus said. “The reason I stay is because I believe in the board of course, and I get to meet so many beautiful people. They also help me to feel young.”

McManus’ hard work has helped spur success for Bowie students. Recently, 24 scholarships were awarded to seniors, totaling a little more than $60,000. It’s the most award money ever given by the Bowie Alumni Association.

McManus is no stranger to accomplishments. She graduated from Bowie High School in 1954 and finished in the top 10% of her class. She also served as a member of the National Honor Society and was a student council representative.

After high school, McManus graduated from Texas Western College, now the University of Texas at El Paso, in 1957. Later, she returned to El Paso ISD as a teacher. McManus taught at Vilas Elementary School, now Mesita Early Childhood Development Center, for 27 years and even earned a Teacher of the Year award during her time as an educator.

McManus’ wealth of experience and passion has helped to inspire those around her, even helping the students thrive in the classroom. She was honored with a Lifetime Achievement honor from the Bowie Alumni Association in December 2023.

The Texas Senate also recognized McManus’ contribution to the City of El Paso and issued a proclamation in 2008 to acknowledge her achievements.
