Herrera student receiving a haircut

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Jan. 23, 2024) — Several students at Herrera Elementary School are sporting new hairstyles after a local barber partnered with the school to give free haircuts to the kids Monday, Jan. 22.

Michelle Turrey of Vintage Trims contacted administrators to get permission to provide the fresh cuts to a dozen students. She said she wanted to lend a helping hand to parents who might be struggling financially.

“The world is a crazy place and I just wanted to do something to help the parents and the kids feel less stressed,” Turrey said. “I hope the kids can look back on this and it’ll inspire them to do something similar in the future and make society a much better place.”

The students who wanted the free haircuts had to get their parents to sign a permission slip. The kids who got their haircuts were excited to show off their new hairdos to their friends during lunch.

This is the first time the event was put together at Herrera Elementary School. Administrators hope they can provide more free haircuts to students later in the semester.

“I think it helps the parents and the students out a lot. I mean haircuts can be expensive,” said Christine Maldonado, the counselor at Herrera Elementary School. “I know that parents have a lot of costs when it comes to raising their children like buying clothing, food, and paying rent, so this is just one thing that can take the load off a little bit.”
