(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – September 20, 2024) — El Paso ISD Police Chief Manny Chavira addresses the important issue of a rise in circulation online and social media content with vague threats and hoaxes made against schools across the nation.
“I want to connect with you about something very important that’s occurring at EPISD. As you may be aware there’s been a rise in activity all cross the country and in the state of Texas of online and social media threats and hoaxes against our campuses.
At the District, we are taking every appropriate step to ensure the safety and security of our students. These threats are non-credible, recycled online, and currently pose no threats to any of our campuses. Parents, we encourage you to speak with your children and encourage them to report any suspicious activity. If you see something, say something. It helps us maintain a safe environment at each of our campuses. It is, however, very important that you report the activity and not repost the threats. I want to emphasize that reposting or resharing or sharing false information in a chat or information group can cause panic, distress, and divert valuable resources away from our campuses.
We will take all the necessary steps to prosecute any individuals, adults or child, who engage in such behavior to the full extent of the law. We really do appreciate your understanding and support as we all work together to keep our community safe.
The safety and well-being of our students is all of our responsibility. I am very grateful for the EPISD community’s vigilance, understanding and support.”
